Phonics & Reading

Phonics is an important part of learning to read. At Welbourne Primary Academy, children from Reception, Key Stage 1 and some children from Key Stage 2, if needed, take part in a daily phonics session. This is so that children can develop their decoding skills in order to become fluent readers. This not only supports the children in all areas of their learning, but also provides the children with a necessary skill needed in all aspects of life. The teaching of phonics, across all classes, follows consistent approach to support the children.

From award winning stories, timeless classics, popular titles and a wide variety of non-fiction texts to those that are phonetically decodable, we use a range of books to support reading at Welbourne Primary Academy. During the school day, children experience books in a variety of ways to encourage and support a love of reading. In our literacy lessons, through the PTL approach, children are encouraged to analyse the texts they read to develop and deepen their inferencing skills. This, in turn, supports the children to ‘read as writers’ and to ‘write as readers’. Staff are encouraged to read to their classes regularly so that children can also enjoy stories that are beyond their current ability. Pupils can also access books, which are not banded, from the School Library. Children also take home individual reading books which are closely matched to their ability in order to practise their fluency skills with their families.
