Mathematics Development

We can develop our mathematical skills throughout continuous provision in the classroom and outdoor area by counting, building, matching, sorting and making shapes. There are shapes in everyday objects that we can spot and talk about. There are also lots of numbers around the classroom that can be used to support the children's number knowledge. We can also spot and make patterns with lots of different objects.

Mathematics is split into two areas that are assessed number and numerical patterns. There is also shape, space and measure that we cover throughout our mathematics curriculam

Number

  • I can count to 10 and have a deep understanding of the composition of each number
  • I can recognise quantities without counting up to 5
  • I can automatically recall number bonds to 5 and some number bonds to 10 including double facts without reference to number rhymes, counting or other aids.

Numerical patterns

  • I can verbally count beyond 20, recognising the pattern of the counting system
  • I can compare quantities up to 10 in different contexts, recognising when one quantity is greater than, less than or the same as the other quantity
  • I can explore and represent patterns within numbers up to 10, including evens and odds, double facts and how quantities can distributed equally.
